ONLINE LEARNING

Everything you need to know for online summer school

Hello and Welcome to Virtual Summer School 2020!

My name is Ms. Werninger (W) and I will be your scholar’s teacher for this class. For the next three weeks, I am here to help your student refresh and practice the skills to help prepare them for the upcoming school year. Here are a few requirements students will need to follow to be successful in this virtual summer classroom:

Attendance:

Attendance for each student will be recorded daily. Attendance will be taken at our mandatory Zoom meeting at 9:00 and/or 11:00 am daily! Showing up to a Zoom meeting will count as one full day of attendance. If students do not show up at all during the Zoom meeting, they will be marked absent. Students are not allowed to miss anymore than 2 Zoom meetings for the duration of the summer school program. If students miss more than 2 Zoom meetings, they will not be eligible for the free Chromebooks given by University Academy.

What is Zoom?:

Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video.

Below is the information for our specific Zoom meeting:

If students are logging in from a Computer, click the link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2618132195?pwd=L3dtS1NSRExXZXJ6eXV5VCtiZHFOQT09

and type in the password: Virtual

If students are logging in from an iPad/Cellphone, type in:

Meeting ID: 261 813 2195

Passcode: Virtual

Assignments and Instruction:

For this virtual class, we will use a variety of websites for instruction and  to complete assignments. One thing I love about educational websites is that I can give immediate feedback to students. Below is a list of the various websites we will use and a quick description.

Schoology.com

Is a new program we are using at UA and will be implementing into the upcoming fall school year. (Yay for a head start!) We will be learning and experiencing this together! This website will be your “one stop shop”. It will be the main website we will use. Students will be able to access the other websites within Schoology so there will be no need for multiple tabs.

Parents, you should already have an email with directions to get your student signed on to schoology. If you did not receive a schoology email please contact me IMMEDIATELY.

Zearn.org

This website we will use for our Math instruction and practice. Some students may be familiar with this website, while others may not. Students will login using their school gmail email and password (I can provide if needed). This website is very kid friendly! A lot of the practice and activities are in the form of video games. Don’t worry, they are still learning lots and progress is being tracked on my end. Students will then join my Virtual summer school class by typing in this class code:KH4R6B

StudyIsland.com

This website students should be very familiar with. It is the website you probably saw the most of in Spring. We will use Study Island for ELA instruction and practice. Students login using their first name and last name @UA (For example: johnsmith@UA).

Password is the same for all students: .k12345. (Unless they have gone in and changed it.)

Summer School themes

University Academy decided to base each week of summer school off a theme. We will be doing fun activities and learning to pair with the theme of the week. My goal is students walk away with something they didn’t know before on a topic they don’t learn about often. Here are the themes for the following weeks:

Week 1- All about a Country (Philippines)

Week 2- All about a Movie (Surf’s Up)

Week 3- All about an Olympic sport (Surfing)
